How Marijuana Can Cure Cancer?

What Is Marijuana?

Marijuana is more popularly known as the recreational drug. Marijuana originated from a combination of two Mexican Spanish names “Maria” and “Juana”. It is a namesake for the drug. However, marijuana is also referred to as hash, hashish, grass, pot, weed, dope, etc.

Botanically, the marijuana plant is referred to as Cannabis. This flowering plant has three varieties: Cannabis sativa; Cannabis indica; and Cannabis ruderalis. The plant originated from South and Central Asia.

Before it is classified as a Schedule I drug, Cannabis has been used by people for hundreds of years in many parts of the world. People use the plant for its fiber (hemp), seed oils, and seed. These parts are used for medical and recreational purposes.

The Cannabis plant contains up to 400 chemicals, including cannabidiolic acid, which similar to penicillin and antibiotic. However, the two popular chemicals in marijuana are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol).

THC has a moderate painkilling effect that is effective in relieving pain. THC affects the body by altering the transmitter release in the spinal cord alleviating the pain in the body. Moreover, the chemical stimulate appetite and induces relaxation and decrease tension and symptoms of aggression. In short, this compound what makes users high.

CBD, on the other hand, is the non-psychoactive compound found in marijuana. This chemical relieves nausea, anxiety, inflammation and convulsions. It also has a sedative effect. CBD is often referred to as the miracle chemical compound that alleviates dystonia symptoms, which is involuntary muscle movements.

Cannabis is available in various forms such as dried leaves, resin, powder form, and oil. Cannabis oil is the extract or the by-product of marijuana and has a higher concentration of CBD than THC. Cannabis oil is believed to be a miracle drug and has a myriad of herbal or medicinal uses.

Can Marijuana Cure Cancer?

Marijuana can allegedly cure cancer, which is a dreaded disease that can be fatal. Chemo and radiotherapy are some of the known cures for cancer. The aim is to contain and kill the cancer cells and prevent them from spreading to other parts of the body. This is claimed to be the effect of cannabinoids to the body.

There is very limited information on how marijuana can cure cancer, but research is underway. Some willing cancer patients became test subjects for clinical trials. The youngest patient submitted to clinical testing of medicinal marijuana is an eight-month-old infant and a patient of physician and cannabis advocate Dr. William Courtney. The patient has an inoperable brain tumor.

In 2012, Dr. William Courtney took in a patient and reportedly cured his cancer with cannabis oil. The identity of the patient was undisclosed, but his condition was a congenital benign tumor in his brain. Now, we expect the child to be three years old and enjoying the new breath of life given to him.

When the patient was diagnosed with the tumor, doctors recommended conventional treatment consisted of chemotherapy, radiotheraphy, and surgery. However, these kinds of treatment run very high risks to the patient because of his very young age. Thus, his parents looked for alternative treatments and stumbled with Dr. Courtney’s project and signed up for it. With direct advice from Dr. Courtney, the family tried putting cannabinoid oil on the baby's pacifier twice a day, while slowly increasing the dosage.

Based on the CT Scan images provided by Dr. Courtney, the size of the tumor dramatically reduced in just two months. After eight months of steadily increasing treatment, the tumor eventually “melted”.

There is a growing number of cancer patients that claim that marijuana beat their cancer. Some patients bravely announce that they are already cancer-free after the treatment. While these patients are under clinical trials, marijuana has become a popular alternative treatment for patients with special cases like the 8-month-old baby as well as desperate cancer patients that cannot be treated by conventional treatment.

Anti-Cancer Properties of Marijuana

A lot of peoples believed that medical marijuana has a lot of benefits, but there is a lack of data and research to prove the safety of the substance. Some of the side effects of Cannabis are tiredness, dizziness, cardiovascular and psychoactive effects. Moreover, withdrawal symptoms are, sometimes, felt by patients. Meanwhile, due to the lack of supporting data on the medical benefits of marijuana, it is clouded by the substance’s negative image.

As there is not enough evidence that will prove that marijuana has been the miracle drug that cancer researchers have been looking for all along, some people are wary to use marijuana for their treatments. One of the reasons why some cancer patients are hesitant is because of the fear that they will be addicted to the substance. Moreover, patients fear that they will get in trouble with the law.

In the past, marijuana is used to treat a wide range of maladies. For cancer patients, cannabis oil is believed to improve the symptoms of the disease and reduce nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy sessions of people with cancer. It can even improve the appetite of people with HIV/AIDS.

Marijuana has myriad of anti-cancer properties. These properties help minimize the cancer cells and eventually kill it. The following are the anti-cancer properties of cannabis:

Anti-Proliferative Effect – This property of marijuana prevents cancer cells from reproducing. This means that’s marijuana can impede cancer cells from increasing in numbers.

Anti-Angiogenic Effect – Anti-angiogenic effect is the prevention of forming new blood vessels that are needed by tumor to grow. Marijuana puts a stop on the formation of blood vessels where the tumor gets its nutrients.

Anti-Metastatic Effect – Metastasis referred to as the scattering of cancer, which doctors prevent to happen as it will be harder to remove the cancer. Marijuana also has the ability to stop cancer from spreading. Thus, it contains the cancer so it will not affect other parts of the body.

Apoptotic Effect – Lastly, marijuana induces cancer cells to commit suicide. Cannabis has a chemical that puts an imprint to cancer cells that push it to its death. Thus, there is no need for surgery as the cancer is “melted” within the body and is flushed.

Research and Limitations/Legal Constraints

Medical practitioners insisted that there is no reliable proof that Marijuana or Cannabis oil can cure cancer. However, research and development are ongoing in order to learn more about the plant and explore its various medicinal purposes. The extensive research about marijuana was prompted by the acceptance of many people of marijuana. In the United States, 18 states approved the use of marijuana for as a medicinal drug and 70 percent of Americans are in favor of legalizing marijuana, according to a survey. With this figures, there is a need to further explore the different purposes of marijuana, especially its medical benefits as a form of alternative treatment.

However, it is not going very smoothly for marijuana advocates as legislative issues with cannabis limit clinical trials and research. Full legalization of marijuana will drive full-blown research and exploration on the medical advantages of the substance. Researches can further explore various components of marijuana in large quantities in order to reveal their pharmaceutical potential and effectiveness in treating cancer and other illness.
